The World of Paper Flight

Paper Flight is the first volume of a series of books containing high performance paper aircraft that you can build with very simple equipment and materials.

The models have been CAD designed, using aeronautical engineering mathematics, to fly over very long distances.

When launched by hand, general flight distances of 15 - 20 meters are typical.

When catapult launched, distances of up to 100 meters are also very typical.

To build the models you will need the following things:

  • If you have purchased the eBook, a computer able to read the file format, and a printer able to output on A4 paper.

  • If you have purchased the print book, a photocopy machine able to output to A4 paper, which is the book paper size.

  • 80 gsm (grams per square meter) A4 paper, the commonest type available.

  • Scissors, a ruler, and glue - I recommend UHU Clear all-purpose, Bostik Clear Bond, or else Sullivan's Craft Glue

  • Cardboard for ballasting the model - preferably of the heavier sort used on breakfast cereals, or pasta. Alternatively, of a thickness of 0.5mm, often available cheaply at art supply shops.

Paper model aircraft are some of the most satisfying model aircraft to build - they are easy to construct, and when well designed, very attractive to the eye.

Flying a model in a small park is great exercise, and therefore paper aircraft are good for your health, and enjoyment seeing an aircraft fly across the space. Paper aircraft are also fully biodegradable, and so pose no harm to the environment.

However, it is important to give the following general warning :

DO NOT FLY YOUR MODELS NEAR ROADS, OR THROW THEM AT PEOPLE !

This is both ordinary safe common sense - after all, we do not play ball games in this way for the same reasons ! And not throwing aircraft at people is common politeness. And you are almost certainly going introduce someone to the hobby.
